Further resources

We hope that you find the following links useful. The list is not exhaustive, but includes those websites that we have found to be a great resource base for our work.

We are always happy to connect with organisations in the work of caring for ex-offenders, so please do forward a request if you would like to be included on our list of links.

Housing

Each borough has what is called a Homeless Person's Unit, which would be the best statutory body to contact with regard to housing in your local area. There are many organisations that also run rehabilitation houses, where they are able to deal with many of the issues that surround ex-offenders on their release.

The Salvation Army also offers a variety of homelessness and housing projects around the country.

Langley House Trust is a national organisation that provides resettlement accommodation to ex-offenders.

Addaction, Phoenix House and Cranstoun are national organisations providing rehabilitation services across the board: housing, treatment and resettlement.

Prisons

Information about individual prisons can be found by visiting the prison service website. Enquiries should normally be made directly to the prison of interest.

Community Chaplaincy

Within each prison there is a team that supports and assists prisoners in their spiritual needs. More and more teams are also being resourced with resettlement teams that focus specifically on the resettlement of ex-offenders following a prison sentence.

Benefit advice and support services

The benefits system can be complicated and seemingly impenetrable. The best way to navigate the system is to contact your local office and speak to the relevant adviser.

Advisers will have specific knowledge and experience that is grouped as follows:

  • Disability advisers - for those in receipt of sickness benefit

  • Working/lone parent allowance advisers - for lone parents or working parents

  • Personal advisers - for those actively seeking work
